About Terence Lee aka Bike Guru

Terence Lee Meng Kai (born 13 June 1989) is a Singapore cycling enthusiast. He is currently a rider in Geylang Cycling Team, Singapore. He competes in both local and overseas races. Terence graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Nanyang Technological University.
Childhood
Terence entered sports at a young age. During his primary school days, he represented Saint Andrew’s Junior School in the Under-12 National Rugby Championship and won a Gold medal for the school. It was during this moment in his childhood that he was inspired by some of the world’s best professional cyclists racing in the Tour De France (the world’s most prestigious race). His dream was to be a professional cyclist. Terence’s parents then bought him a four wheels kids bike from a bicycle shop. His passion grew deeper and started to ride around the neighbourhood. In the process of learning how to balance and ride with two wheels, he rode and fell into a drain. That made him more eager to pedal and balance himself with two wheels.
National Rugby Championship (Under-12) Champions
Terence’s life nearly came to a halt right after he finished the Ordinary Level (O Level) Cambridge Examinations. He had a near fatal road cycling accident in December 2005. He was training with the cycling group where he clipped the wheel of the front rider and crashed. As the peloton of cyclists were riding very closely, many riders went over him in what was like a domino pile up effect. Terence was in a coma for 11 days where he suffered multiple injuries to his head, skull, ear, collar bone, lungs and broken ribs. Dr Ernest Wang (Neurosurgeon), Dr Eng Soh Ping (Ear Nose Throat Specialist) were the primary doctors who saved Terence’s life. During Terence’s coma in the Intensive Care Unit, the doctors told Terence’s parents that his rate of survival was only 50/50. He could remain in coma or, if he woke up, he could be paralysed. By God’s grace, he woke up on 1st January 2006. Terence could not even walk and had to re-learn how to walk again. The doctor told Terence that he needed to work hard to regain his fitness. After Terence was discharged from the hospital, he spent time working hard to exercise to regain his stamina. His recovery was very fast. After less than a year of recuperation, Terence completed a 42km Standard Chartered Marathon.
Riding up Cameron Highlands
Two years after his first road crash, Terence decided to pursue cycling again. Terence ventured to the roads and joined Joyriders (recreational cycling community) in 2011. A highlight of his cycling trip with Joyriders was to Cameron Highlands (1500m above sea level), where everyone was to cycle up the steep road to the top of the highland.

In 2012, Terence was invited to join DB2 BikeLabz Racing Team. Bikelabz was one of the top tier teams in Singapore. During the summer that year, he attended a few months of training camp in Kuala Terengganu. This was where the intensive training with the Terengganu Cycling Team (SUKMA) was conducted. Approximately 1000km mileage in a week. He lived with the riders in a flat. He made many new friends including the Chief Operating Officer of Terengganu Inc. TSG Cycling Team, Mr Nasiruddin (Daddy to Terence when he was training in Kuala Terengganu), as well as many national cyclists in Malaysia. It was a tough training camp, six days of riding in a week with Friday as a rest day. Immediately after the training camp, Terence returned to Singapore for the 2012 National Road Race Championship. Apart from the mass start road race, Terence also raced in the Shah Alam Criterium and Muar Sukan Cycling Bandar Maharani in 2012, finishing in 5th position. In 2013, Terence trained under Adrian Ng of MSTI, who is currently the Head Coach for the Singapore Cycling Federation. Trainings were tough and he had to manage between school and sports.

In 2014, Terence represented T3 Bicycle Gears in a mountain bike race.

Months after, Terence was involved in a mountain bike crash where he fell into a three foot ditch at Bukit Timah Mountain Bike Trail. He walked out of the forest with his bicycle, his face bleeding profusely. He sustained facial fractures and the doctors had to reconstruct his face via plastic surgery with titanium plates inserted. That did not deter Terence to continue cycling. After many months of recovery, he was back on the road again to cycle.

He was certified to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and the use of Automated External Defibrillator (AED). In addition, Terence achieved a few sports proficiencies such as Bronze Medallion Award, Lifesaving 1/2/3, Kayaking 1/2/3 Star, Rock climbing Level 1 & Level 2, Abseiling Level 1 & Level 2.
